3 MONTHS LATER....

So sorry for the delay in updating life in Oz.  It's just the beginning of August 2012, and I have been working full time in the child care industry, so I haven't had the time to blog.  As I am home, recuperating from a cold, I thought I might update the site a bit....

I hope all is going well with fam and friends and anyone viewing. We are doing well.  Both of us trying to find new paths on employment and that keeps us busy. I will try to update some more soon....maybe even later today! Toodles from Down Under!

My Koala Fetish Frenzy Fiesta!

So, each Sunday, as I have said before, we go on a short day trip.  It's usually to the coast along the Great Ocean Road to places like Lorne or Apollo Bay and little places in between.  Joseph needs his water fix.  And he has enjoyed bring home abalone to family and friends for the past month...

And no, I do not find them tasty.  The texture is just too rubberyish for my palate.  But his fam and friends love them...

Anywhoooo...I have been wanting to go into the bush again and particularly in the rainforst, so we went down to Cape Otway and then got sidetracked a bit on seeing the creatures I love the mostest here in Oz...Koalas.  Cuddly, cuteriffic koalas....

So here is a  Koala Collection.  Note how different each koala looks.  They are so individualized. Enjoy.

Look in the tree....
Look at those claws...
Obviously a male koala :o)
Scratching...
Climbing for the leaves at the top...

See how they have eaten all of those leaves?

It was on the news this morning that the koala is getting on the list for endangerment, but in other states outside of Victoria.  That is a relief.  At least they are okay here. For now. So enjoy the beauty of these captured moments...

Lorne, Victoria

Just a few photos from our sunday drive down to Lorne.  It was a quiet day of snorkeling(Joseph) and relaxing on the rocks (me) after morning mass at St. John's in Geelong and lunch at the Martian's Cafe- one of my faves here in Dean's Marsh- on the way to Lorne-  their chai tea is a whole experience in itself, and they have some of the yummiest wraps around!

KILN FIRING TIME OUT BACK

Joseph is firing some vases and bowls today....goofy goggles unnecessary,, but supposedly fun to wear.(well, it is bright when you have to look in that small hole to peek inside and see if these little sticks have melted)  Hoping they come out well....had about 25 items inside....we have to wait until tomorrow as it needs to cool down.  You should see some of his past work that I see in friends and family members houses, bowls, plates, vases, sculptures- wonderful!!!!

Hello Again!

And so I have just enjoyed a lit sparkler before sitting down to write a little more about a Hoosier girl’s new life in Oz.  Maybe this will be a new ritual I do before typing to my fellow Americans. In all honesty, I only have sparklers here on my desk as they are leftovers from Joseph’s birthday.  Many birthday cakes here don a sparkler or two instead of birthday candles. They have birthday candles as well, of course, but the sparklers are sold right next to the candles in the grocery store for birthday cake access.  I missed out on the 4th of July back in Indiana, so I was all up on buying a package of 24 for a buck.  And they last muuuuch longer once lit, too. Not too shabby, I’d say.

The weather hit a new warmth today: 30 degrees Celsius.  That’s, of course, in the upper 80's back in the USA.  It  is nice to finally experience the warmth and greenery of November in Victoria. It is also cause for us to turn the air conditioning on.  Our little bungalow can really heat up in the sun.  We woke up leisurely this Saturday morning and got ready, then hit the Corio market, which has really good prices on anything from fresh produce, flowers, nuts, breads and sausages to work shirts, coffee grinders, lighters, undies and soap.  Many of the vendors looked silly in umbrella hats, but I understood it was probably quite hot under the sun all morning and you could catch a good burn if you don’t try to get some cover.

The produce lady, a tired looking, but happy pregnant lady noticed my American accent and asked where I was from in the US, and so I told her, but she had not heard of Indiana (sigh).  I have learned (or is it learnt?!)to tell people where I am from by how far it is south east of Chicago.  Most people know Chicago from television shows.  However, it is surprising how many people know where Indiana is.  There have been some who have been to the Hoosier state as well…Valpraiso being one of the places on our state map. Another, Indianapolis. That’s about it for Hoosier visitors I have bumped into here in Victoria.  There are really surprisingly large amounts of people here who have travelled abroad and especially to the USA, but mostly the western states, plus NYC and Florida.  They all have spoken about what a great time they have had there and the great people.  I think the American people are quite intrigued with Aussies and give them kind conversations filled with inquiries on Australia, presenting themselves as truly interested in them and treating them well.  At least that is what Joseph and I think.

I also bought, although early, some Christmas cards at the market that were hand-made, which has inspired me to make my own cards for the following year.  It would be too expensive now, to buy all of the materials.  I think it best to collect the materials all through next year, while I see them for a good price.  Things cost so much here.  If something is pricey, they often say it is “quite dear” here. I find many things quite dear here!

And now I am off of this computer to go and see what  Joseph is up to- he has been outside watering roses.  We have access to the most beautiful roses! Yellow, deep reds, Georgia sized peach ones, pink ones and creamy white one with rosy pink edges. I am not used to all of these, so they thrill me each time I walk past them on the way to the car…

Toodles, dear family and friends,

Angie

The Latest and Greatest...

Hello dear fam and friends!

I said I was going to write most sundays, and so I will start with this one as I am recuperating from an exhaustive week.  I am going to evening mass at 6 p.m., so I am resting on the couch with the laptop, connecting with my US peeps.  The screen doors are open and there is a nice breeze on a sunny day.  Jospeh has to work from 2-7 p.m., so I get the place to myself.  I will let all know that I was offered a full time position within Karingal as the Team Leader to run the Rossack House in East Geelong.  A low to moderate care accomodation facility for disabled adults.  There are 4 women and 2 men with various disabilities and they fit the requirements to live in the house, which allows them to live as similarly as possible to others in the community.  There are casual and permanent-part time staff that come in on a rotation basis to help with the needs.  The clients have an organised life where community activity and inhouse activity are going on, family and friends are kept updated and involved, etc.  I am the one in charge of the house, with all of the staff and clients and all of the paperwork, etc.  Making sure it is running smoothly and effectively and happily.  I accepted the job as I will make more money and have the benefits that come along with it.  I start tomorrow with 4 weeks of training under a wonderful lady who has been with accomodations for over 20 years.  I am told the clients are lovely and staff are okay, they have just gotten used to doing little and need refreshement.  I am that refreshement, so please pray for me to make this house a wonderful place to work and live in!

Now, Joseph is still looking for better work as well. He would like better pay and hours as well in a job that is satisfying and pleasing to God.  We will begin in a month or so to look for bigger housing and hopefully have a new place by Christmas.  That is my goal, at least!  The presbytry in Winchelsea was too much for the rent- we were suprised they wanted so much for a house that hasn't been lived in for years and needed updating...oh well, God has everything under control.  We will just keep looking.  It would have been nice, though, to live there, even though it was a bit out in the country. Sigh.

I hope all are well.  Keep in touch.  I miss you all!

Angie Purtill  :o)
